For so many queer women, shame arrives before freedom ever gets the chance to.
That’s exactly what Cris White is trying to change.
Based in North Carolina, Cris uses her voice and platform to challenge the silence surrounding queer women’s sexuality, body exploration, and sexual health. Her work centers honesty, liberation, and unlearning the shame many women are taught to carry from a young age.
“My experience equates to liberation. Women are often forced to keep quiet about their bodies and sex lives especially in the queer community while being in a patriarchal society. However, with the work I do, I plan to make a change to that. I’ve helped multiple women to not feel shame around who they are and what the desire.”
For Cris, being featured in Orbit Utopia is about creating more visibility for conversations that are too often hidden, dismissed, or stigmatized.
“I want to be featured in Orbit Utopia because I feel it’s the perfect place to help bring awareness to queer women about the ability to not live in fear of exploration with their sexuality and bodies.”
Her coming out journey was not defined by one singular moment, but by slowly allowing herself to embrace what always felt true.
“I started off as being bisexual since middle school. I dated my best friends and told my mother about it. Of course, being as young as I was, she brushed it off as me just being curious but here we are! After dating boy throughout high school, I finally put a halt to that the moment I turned 22. Shortly after, I started dating women again and it just felt so right. I turned 30 not too long ago and have dated women ever since. Now, I identify as being a lesbian. My parents have accepted my lifestyle and I still have a good relationship with them.”
Much of her perspective today has been shaped by witnessing the double standards women face daily, especially surrounding sex education and bodily autonomy.
“There isn’t a particular moment that shaped who I am today. Honestly, it’s more or less how this society is ran. Seeing the double standard between men and women when it comes to sex education and expressing their sexual nature. I despise the patriarchy and misogyny with a passion. Most men feel they can have control over women and their bodies. Therefore, my goal is to dismantle it, not only with my own lifestyle, but by also bringing awareness to my lovely queer women.”
Cris also recognizes how easily people misunderstand her intentions.
“People assume that what I do is simply about being rebellious by being “overly” sexual when, in reality, it is not. People don’t see the bigger picture in what I do and I want to change that by letting my voice be heard especially on platforms such as this.”
More than anything, she wants to see conversations around women’s health and queer education become normalized instead of suppressed.
“I wish I saw more on women’s health and sex education and exploration especially within the queer community. Too many women are unaware of what their body can do and how to properly treat it because of how much information like that is suppressed or the shame/bullying built around speaking up when something feels wrong.”
Even beyond her own story, Cris believes spaces like Orbit Utopia are necessary for the future of queer storytelling and community.
“I believe what you’re doing is amazing. I would love to learn more about you and felt the urge to start this. It’s truly needed in our community so thank you.”
